The Role of the CIO

The CIO has two major roles, strategic partner/trusted advisor in the organisation to achieve the goals and to lead the technology department. This module discusses the implications of these roles in a forward-thinking organisation. How do you manage these elements without being the expert in them? How do you manage the expectations of your peers in the organisation?

You will write your job description for the CIO role in your organisation.   

Developing the IT Strategy

In a changing world, old ways of developing the IT Strategy need to be rethought.

You will write your high-level Strategic Plan that aligns with the organisation’s objectives and the industry’s challenges and opportunities.

The Technology Organisation

New opportunities and new expectations challenge the provision of technology services.

At the end of the module, you will present your organisation structure, how it aligns with the rest of the organisation.

Building Relationships

Successful leaders know the value of building relations across the organisation, and invest time into it.

At the end of the module, you will present your organisation structure, how it aligns with the rest of the organisation.

 

Leadership & Talent Management

Leaders are judged on their own skills as well as those of their direct reports.

You will plan to develop your own leadership skills and those of your team.

Cyber Security in Technology

Risk reduction and resilience is critical to the success of the whole organisation.

You will develop a Cyber Security checklist to identify areas for deeper dives to understand risks.

 

Sustainability & ESG

While sustainability is the role of the whole organisation, technology provides many of the needed solutions.

You will develop your technology based environmental plan for your organisation.

Communication for IT Professionals

Successful leaders are good communicators. It is one of the ‘soft’ skills on which we are judged as leaders.

You will develop an IT Communication/Marketing plan.

Enterprise Architecture & Innovation

Successful innovation deployment requires understanding the business plans and integrating the innovation properly into the organisation’s business and technology landscape.

You will define the job descriptions (roles, responsibilities and decision rights) of each of the strategy roles within IT.

Programme & Project Management

The ability to deliver projects successfully, is still one of the ways that the technologists are judged.

You will identify the project management methodology that you will be using within your own organisation.

Managing the Internal Client

Leaders stand or fall by the reputation that IT has across the organisation. This is a combination of softer skills and technology competence.

 You will produce a plan to manage the internal clients of IT that will include its objective and how that objective will be reached.

Infrastructure Management

As infrastructure becomes more complicated, we will discuss the Software Defined Infrastructure and it’s implications.  

You will assess your current journey to the cloud and produce a plan to become more cloud smart, identifying the benefits.

 

Analytics and Business Intelligence

Data is the basis for successful implementation of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robotic Process Automation as well as corporate decision making.

You will define the information needed to manage IT and the information to play back to the rest of the organisation.  Your plan to provide the service for the data functions across your business.

Outsourcing & Smart Sourcing

Long used in the technology industry to provide key skills and services, with the new technologies and directions for the organisation, there are new considerations.  

You will present a plan for managing key strategic partners.

 

Managing IT Finance

Often one of the larger budgets in any organisation, IT Budgets are always under scrutiny.

You will be able to produce an IT Budget that funds known costs and has contingencies based on experience of previous years.

The CIOs First 100 Days

This module brings all the prior modules together and the case study is submitted to the Assessment Board prior to the Assessment Interview.

 For CIOs new in the role, either by promotion or new opportunity, you will produce your plan for the first 100 days. For those that are in existing roles, you will produce your plan for the next 100 days after this series of classes have been completed.
